With The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt coming to a close with its Blood and Wine expansion, fans are waiting to see what CD Projekt Red does next. It’s well known that the studio is working on the ambitious sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077, but it apparently has something else in the works as well, and that mystery game could be revealed as soon as E3 next month.
This is according to CD Projekt Red studio head Marcin Iwinski, who recently confirmed as much in an interview with the outlet Eurogamer. Iwinski hinted that the developer may very well maintain a presence at E3 2016 in June, but that it’s too early to show Cyberpunk 2077 just yet. However, Iwinski teased that CD Projekt Red will be showing something brand new at the event instead.
CD Projekt Red has alluded to this mysterious project in the past, stating that it will be a “new type of video game format” that the studio hasn’t tackled with any of its previous titles. It’s also been said that the game will be revealed or released by the end of 2016, so an E3 unveiling isn’t out of the question.
There’s also the possibility that the mysterious project is somehow connected to The Witcher series. When asked outright if the project is tied to The Witcher, Iwinski said, “Time will tell.” This does seem to suggest a connection of sorts between whatever CD Projekt Red has cooking and its flagship franchise, but it being a “new type of video game format” makes it more difficult to guess exactly what that connection could be.
CD Projekt Red has tackled PC, console, and mobile game development in the past, so it remains to be seen what the company means by a “new type of video game format.” Perhaps this statement is in reference to the virtual reality technology on the horizon, and CD Projekt Red is developing a Witcher VR game for Oculus Rift or PlayStation VR. With rumors of an upgraded Xbox One console at E3, for the purpose of virtual reality support, maybe we’ll see this possible VR project from the studio during Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2016.
Speculation aside, with Cyberpunk 2077 said to be bigger than The Witcher III, it’s not surprising that CD Projekt Red is not ready to talk about it just yet. While that game is still a long ways off, CD Projekt Red fans should be reassured in knowing that there’s a possibility of seeing a new game from the company in just a few week’s time, and they may even have the opportunity to play it before 2016 comes to a close.
